NCRI urges urgent international intervention as Iran escalates executions of alleged PMOI affiliates
Iran’s judiciary has upheld the death sentence of political prisoner Mansour Jamali, intensifying concerns over a renewed wave of executions targeting alleged members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
According to a statement issued on March 31 by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the country’s Supreme Court has confirmed the execution order against Jamali, who is currently held in Choobindar Prison in Qazvin. The ruling places him at imminent risk of execution.
Jamali had previously been sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court in Qazvin on charges of “enmity against God” (moharebeh), based solely on alleged membership in the PMOI. The court proceedings were reportedly presided over by a judge identified by opposition sources as Ismail Asadi.
A 55-year-old native of Urmia, Jamali was arrested in October 2023 in the city of Buin Zahra. Reports indicate that he endured prolonged interrogation and torture during his detention. After approximately 15 months, his case was formally referred to court with the charge of moharebeh.
Critically, throughout both his detention and trial, Jamali was denied access to legal counsel of his choosing, raising serious concerns about due process violations and the integrity of the judicial proceedings.
The NCRI statement situates Jamali’s case within a broader pattern of escalating repression. It claims that Iranian authorities have increasingly resorted to executions as a means of containing internal dissent amid mounting social unrest. According to the statement, at least four prisoners affiliated with the PMOI were executed in the days immediately preceding the court’s decision.
Describing the current situation as a systematic campaign of political repression, the NCRI has called on international bodies—including the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Human Rights Council, and the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran—to take immediate action.
The organization urged these institutions, along with global human rights advocates, to intervene urgently to halt the execution of Mansour Jamali and secure the release of all political prisoners currently facing death sentences in Iran.
As international scrutiny of Iran’s human rights record intensifies, cases like Jamali’s are likely to further amplify calls for accountability and coordinated global response.
