According to a report by The New York Times, the Islamic Republic of Iran has intensified its efforts to undermine American democracy through a wave of fake websites and hacking attacks. These actions are believed to be aimed at discrediting American institutions and potentially influencing the outcome of the U.S. presidential election to the detriment of Donald Trump. Iran is now playing a leading role in spreading false information related to the American presidential elections.

The Mechanics of Iran’s Disinformation Campaign

A significant portion of Tehran’s disinformation campaign is carried out through websites that appear to be U.S.-based but are actually controlled and updated from Tehran. These websites are designed to look like legitimate news sources, targeting various American demographics with tailored content.

The New York Times highlighted several examples of these fake websites:

  • Savannah Times: This website presents itself as “your trusted source for conservative news and views on the vibrant city of Savannah.”
  • The New Thinker: This site claims to be “your go-to destination for progressive news and views.”
  • Westland Sun: A website targeting Muslim communities in the suburbs of Detroit.

U.S. officials and technology analysts have identified these websites as part of a broader campaign by the Islamic Republic to influence the U.S. presidential election.

Tehran’s Expanding Influence Operations

Historically, Iran has conducted covert intelligence operations against its perceived enemies, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. However, these activities were often overshadowed by similar campaigns from Russia and China. Recently, though, Iran’s propaganda and disinformation efforts have become bolder, more diversified, and more ambitious.

Experts on Iran, along with U.S. government officials and corporate executives, believe that Tehran’s current efforts are primarily aimed at undermining Donald Trump’s chances of returning to the White House. However, these efforts have also targeted Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, suggesting that Iran’s ultimate goal is to sow discord and discredit the American democratic system on a global scale.

U.S. Intelligence Response

Avril Haines, the Director of U.S. National Intelligence, recently warned that Iran has become increasingly aggressive in its attempts to influence global events, particularly by undermining confidence in democratic institutions. On August 19, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a joint statement underscoring the significance of this year’s election in the eyes of Tehran. According to the statement:

“Iran seeks to stoke discord and undermine confidence in our democratic institutions. Iran has furthermore demonstrated a longstanding interest in exploiting societal tensions through various means, including through the use of cyber operations to attempt to gain access to sensitive information related to U.S. elections.”

The statement also highlighted the increasingly aggressive nature of Iranian activities during this election cycle, particularly in influence operations targeting the American public and cyber operations focusing on presidential campaigns.

The U.S. intelligence community is confident that Iran has engaged in social engineering and other tactics to gain access to individuals with direct ties to both political parties’ presidential campaigns. These activities, including data thefts and disclosures, are intended to influence the U.S. election process.

Continued Cyber Attacks by Iranian Hackers

On August 28, three U.S. intelligence and security agencies issued a joint statement confirming that Iranian-affiliated hackers have continued their cyber attacks against American organizations and other countries, including Israel, Azerbaijan, and the UAE. They reported that sectors such as education, finance, healthcare, defense, and local government institutions in the U.S. have been primary targets of these Iran-based hackers.

The FBI’s assessment suggests that a significant portion of these hacking operations is aimed at gaining access to networks, deploying ransomware, and collaborating with other actors who utilize ransomware. Additionally, the FBI noted that these hackers are also seeking to steal sensitive technical data related to U.S. organizations for the benefit of the Iranian regime.

Targeting U.S. Political Figures

On August 14, Google reported that hackers affiliated with the Iranian regime have been actively targeting the user accounts of individuals close to U.S. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump. The report identifies the APT-42 group as responsible for targeting nearly 12 individuals connected to Biden and Trump, including government officials and campaign staff from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

The week before, Microsoft revealed that a high-ranking official at one of the election headquarters was the target of a spear-phishing attack. Microsoft researchers had previously published a detailed report discussing the online activities of Iranian regime agents in the U.S., aimed at escalating political and social tensions.

The hacking of Trump campaign documents has heightened concerns about Iranian interference, especially as U.S. officials previously believed that Russia posed a greater foreign threat to the upcoming election. However, a new assessment by U.S. officials suggests that Tehran is not only seeking to create chaos in America but is also actively working to damage Donald Trump’s candidacy—just as it did four years ago.

Broader Implications of Iran’s Influence Operations

In addition to targeting political figures, U.S. intelligence officials have indicated that the Iranian regime is also attempting to directly influence U.S. citizens through its operations. This includes financing pro-Palestinian protests at American universities and using extensive networks of online personas and propaganda “factories” to spread disinformation.
