Canberra, Australia – On the second anniversary of the death of Mahsa Jina Amini, the Australian government has announced targeted financial sanctions and travel bans on five Iranian individuals. These individuals are being held accountable for their involvement in the violent repression of protests in Iran.

The sanctions target senior security and law enforcement officials who have been implicated in the crackdown on demonstrations that followed Amini’s death. The Australian government has expressed deep concern over the ongoing human rights abuses in Iran, particularly against women and girls.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated, “Australia stands with Iranian women and girls in their struggle for equality and empowerment.” She emphasized the importance of holding Iran accountable for its actions and promoting respect for human rights.

The new sanctions bring the total number of Iran-linked individuals and entities sanctioned by Australia to 195. This includes nearly 100 individuals and entities associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Australian government has consistently condemned Iran’s human rights record and its destabilizing activities in the region.
