In contemporary politics, there are moments when formal articles and diplomatic niceties fail to capture the gravity of a situation. We find ourselves in such a moment now. Why? Because of the irresponsible appeasement policy of Western powers towards a brutal, blood-shedding regime.

The Iranian regime appears elated by the world’s powers’ weakness in addressing its terrorism and human rights violations. Instead of confronting these issues, Western nations are rewarding Iran, effectively paving the way for more wars in the Middle East and increasing atrocities within the country.

By betraying all human rights principles and values, these policies stab the Iranian people in the back and degrade the moral standards of the Western nations themselves, exposing their vulnerability to such a regime.

For those unfamiliar with the specifics, let us enumerate the shameful concessions made to this regime:

A Series of Concessions

The Release of Asadollah Asadi

On May 26, 2023, Belgian media announced the release of Asadollah Asadi following a prisoner swap for Olivier Vandecasteele, a Belgian humanitarian worker arrested in Iran in 2022 on espionage charges. Who is Asadollah Asadi? He is an Iranian diplomat involved in a 2018 plot to bomb the Grand Gathering of the Iranian Resistance. The Iranian Resistance and dissidents warned that such actions would embolden the regime to expand its terrorism abroad and increase executions, torture, and human rights violations within Iran. Yet, these warnings went unheeded.

The Surge in Executions

Then in a report dated April 4, Amnesty International revealed that the Iranian regime executed at least 853 people in 2023. Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, highlighted that the significant rise in recorded executions worldwide was primarily due to Iran.

Condolences for a Dictator

Following the death of Iran’s former president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2023, the United States, NATO, and senior European Union officials expressed condolences. Raisi, known as the “Butcher of Tehran,” was a key figure in the 1988 massacre and directed brutal crackdowns on recent protests, resulting in thousands of deaths. Yet, the global powers chose to mourn this notorious figure, further betraying the Iranian people.

French Police Raid on the Iranian Resistance

Shortly after Raisi’s death, on June 12, the French police raided the Sima Association, affiliated with the Iranian Resistance. The Iranian regime’s judiciary deputy joyfully announced, “We welcome the French police’s attack on the main headquarters of the PMOI,” and boasted that the operation was monitored live by Iran. The regime’s media outlets even published fake photos of weapons allegedly found in the building.

On the same day, international media reported the release of a French banking consultant who had spent nearly two years in detention in Iran. This move by the French government, which has a long history of succumbing to the Iranian regime’s threats and blackmail, was yet another instance of paying a heavy price from the pockets of the Iranian people and their resistance.

Sweden’s Deal with Iran

Not long after the French government’s disgraceful act, Sweden decided to release Hamid Noury, one of the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Swedish judiciary. This move, like the previous ones, pleased the regime, and Noury was even welcomed with a red carpet at the airport. This was part of a deal to release two Swedish hostages, Johan Floderus, a Swedish diplomat, and dual national Saeed Azizi, from Iranian prisons. Once again, the price for such a shameful act was paid from the pockets of the Iranian people and their resistance.

The Next Dangerous Move?

The question now is, what will be the next ignominious and dangerous move by Western governments in appeasing this brutal regime? The world is witnessing the devastating effects of such policies in the ongoing war in Gaza, the continuing attacks on international fleets by regime-supported Houthis, and Iran’s decision to expand its nuclear activities.

It should be noted that this policy only encourages the regime’s nuclear and hegemonic ambitions, as well as its human rights violations and atrocities towards the Iranian people. The outcome of this policy will undoubtedly endanger global peace and stability.
