U.S. highlights deepening humanitarian and gender-based crises under the Iran regime
The United States has issued a strong condemnation of the worsening social and humanitarian crisis in Iran, highlighting a surge in suicides and a growing pattern of violence and discrimination against women and girls under the rule of the Iranian regime.
According to the U.S. Department of State, nearly 7,000 people die by suicide every year in Iran, a figure it describes as a stark reflection of the deepening hopelessness across the country. Economic hardship, political repression, and the absence of social freedoms have left millions—particularly youth and educated professionals—without prospects for a secure future. The State Department notes with alarm that more than half of all suicide victims are girls under the age of 18, exposing the severe vulnerabilities faced by young women.

In a separate but related statement, the United States strongly condemned the persistent violence and discrimination targeting women and girls in Iran. Over the past year alone, more than 100 women and girls—including children as young as five—were killed in domestic violence incidents. Many were targeted for resisting forced or child marriage, requesting a divorce, or simply attempting to assert independence. Alongside such abuses, women remain subject to routine threats and state-sponsored violence by the Iranian regime.

Despite these grave injustices, the State Department emphasized the extraordinary courage demonstrated by Iranian women, who continue to confront repression and demand change for the future of their society. The United States reaffirmed that it stands with the women of Iran and all Iranians seeking freedom, justice, and human dignity.
