The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is searching for Majid Dastjani Farahani, a 41-year-old Iranian intelligence officer, suspected of plotting the assassination of US officials.

According to the FBI’s Florida office, Farahani speaks Farsi, French, Spanish, and English. He reportedly travels frequently between Iran and Venezuela.

The FBI alleges that Farahani recruited individuals “to lethally target current and former officials” in the United States as revenge for the killing of Qasem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Quds Force.

US authorities have previously identified serious threats against former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Advisor John Bolton. American officials believe both Pompeo and Brian Hook, the Trump administration’s envoy for Iran affairs, are on Tehran’s “assassination list” and are under protection due to the threats.

In December 2023, the United States sanctioned Iran, including Farahani and Mohammad Mehdi Khanpour Ardestani, accusing them of involvement in plotting against American officials. Both individuals were alleged to have recruited individuals for both assassinations and surveillance activities within the US.

Furthermore, the US and UK sanctioned an “international terror network” in January 2024, targeting Iranian activists and opponents of the regime.

Earlier in 2022, the US charged Shahram Poursafi, also known as Mehdi Rezaei, a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, for plotting to assassinate John Bolton for a sum of $300,000.

Qasem Soleimani was killed by a US drone strike in Baghdad on January 3, 2020, under the orders of then-President Donald Trump. The attack also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), and eight others.

Iran has repeatedly vowed to retaliate for Soleimani’s death. In his 2023 United Nations address, President Ebrahim Raisi stated that the Islamic Republic “will make every effort to prosecute the perpetrators” of the killing.
