IRAN: OFFICIALS’ NUCLEAR RHETORIC

By Iran News Update Staff

It has previously been suggested that the Rouhani administration and particularly Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are engaged in a game of skillful diplomacy alongside Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. That is, while Khamenei directs combative rhetoric against the West and fixes the red lines for his negotiators as they discuss Iran’s nuclear program, Zarif gives the impression of willingness to compromise, thus keeping Western powers at the table.

Iran warned of 'last chance' in nuclear talks after deadline missed

(Reuters) - Iran faced Western pressure on Saturday to make concessions over its atomic activities after it and six world powers failed to meet a July 20 deadline for a deal to end the decade-old dispute but agreed to keep talking.

We're Talking To the Wrong Iranians

TOWNHALL: When it comes to an agreement with Iran about its nuclear program, no deal is better than a bad deal. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered the news to President Obama this week that a deal was unlikely by the July 20th deadline agreed to at the beginning of talks last September -- which no doubt disappointed his boss, who is desperate for some foreign policy success to point to. But unless Iran is willing to give up its program -- and dismantle the uranium-enriching centrifuges it currently operates and destroy its existing stockpile of heavily enriched uranium -- economic sanctions should not be lifted.

With Extension Looming, Renewed Visions for Nuclear Deal Emerge

By Iran News Update staff

With an extension of nuclear the interim nuclear agreement now a near-certainty, in spite of massive gaps that still exist between the US and Iranian positions, there has apparently been a new outpouring of analyses of what a final agreement must look like in order to defend Western interests.

Iran May Have Finally Activated Facility Required by Interim Agreement

By Iran News Update Staff

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Iran may have finally begun the process of converting its low-grade enriched uranium in compliance with the terms of the interim nuclear deal signed in November. These reports come only days before the deadline for either the completion of a final agreement or the extension of talks between Iran and the P5+1. Any such extension would depend upon agreement that there is serious commitment to the process on all sides, and this agreement would certainly depend upon Iran being perceived as being in full or nearly full compliance with the agreement it signed eight months ago.

No Iran breakthrough with Kerry in Vienna

VIENNA (AP) — Joint efforts by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and three other Western foreign ministers failed Sunday to advance faltering nuclear talks with Iran, with the target date for a deal only a week away.
