In a move to underscore the United States’ opposition to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, U.S. Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) has introduced legislation calling for an unequivocal stance on the issue. Partnering with Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY), Moskowitz emphasized that “all options” should be considered to counter the potential threat posed by a nuclear-capable Iran.
Moskowitz, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Intelligence, described Iran’s nuclear program as “an existential threat to the United States and global stability.” He urged leaders to acknowledge the danger posed by Tehran’s nuclear expansion, calling it “an unacceptable escalation in the Middle East and a national security threat against the United States and our allies.”
“The United States won’t stand for anything less and will consider all options to protect our national security,” Moskowitz said. “We must send a clear, bipartisan message that we stand with our ally Israel and that a continued nuclear program in Iran is an absolute nonstarter.”
This initiative aligns with a parallel Senate measure introduced by a bipartisan group of senators, including John Fetterman (D-PA), Katie Britt (R-AL), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC). The proposed legislation aims to reinforce U.S. policy on Iran’s nuclear activities, with key provisions stating:
- Iran’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons is a credible threat to the United States and an existential threat to Israel and other U.S. allies in the Middle East.
- “All options should be considered” in addressing Iran’s nuclear threat.
- Iran must immediately cease all activities threatening U.S. and allied national security, including uranium enrichment, development of nuclear-capable missile systems, and possession of nuclear warheads.
Importantly, while the legislation asserts a firm stance, it does not grant authorization for U.S. military action.
The proposed measures also highlight Iran’s history of hostility toward the United States and its allies, citing its financial support for Hamas and Hezbollah and its efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Additionally, the bills reference the regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s continued support for Iran’s “Death to America” rhetoric and his characterization of Israel as a “cancerous growth” that must be eradicated.
Recent intelligence assessments have reinforced concerns over Iran’s nuclear capabilities. In December, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence reported that Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium far exceeded the levels necessary for non-weapon purposes. The assessment warned that, with further enrichment, Iran could produce more than a dozen nuclear weapons.
Later that month, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s nuclear advancements and urging Tehran to “immediately halt its nuclear escalation.”
As Iran’s regime continues to expand its nuclear program despite international warnings, U.S. lawmakers are seeking to send a strong, bipartisan message that such actions will not be tolerated. The latest legislative push underscores Washington’s commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and ensuring stability in the region.
