Claudia Carli, Democratic Party group leader on the Cuneo City Council, highlights the Italian city’s unanimous resolutions in 2022 and 2024 condemning human rights violations in Iran and endorses a democratic republic based on the Iranian Resistance’s Ten-Point Plan.
Speaking at an event organized by the municipality in cooperation with the Cuneo branch of the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI), Carli stressed that defending human rights in Iran was a responsibility the city had consistently upheld across political lines.
Cuneo, known as the “City of Freedom and Resistance,” had already taken concrete steps in support of the Iranian people. Carli recalled that in 2022 and 2024, the city council unanimously adopted resolutions condemning repression, violence, executions, and grave human rights violations in Iran.
“These were not decisions taken lightly,” she explained, emphasizing that the council had acted out of a sense of duty rather than political convenience. For Carli, solidarity with people struggling for their fundamental rights was an essential responsibility of local government, particularly for a city whose identity is rooted in the struggle for freedom and resistance.
Executions Used to Intimidate Iranian Society
Carli said the worsening situation in Iran made renewed international attention indispensable. The decision to organize another event on the issue, she stressed, was not a matter of routine but a response to the continued deterioration of human rights.
She drew particular attention to executions carried out without genuine judicial proceedings, describing them as instruments used by the Iranian regime to spread fear throughout society and prevent organized uprisings.
Such practices, she warned, constitute crimes against humanity and demand sustained scrutiny by the international community. Allowing these violations to fade from public attention would abandon those confronting repression and deny the seriousness of the abuses taking place.
Carli also thanked the mayors and municipal representatives from surrounding communities who attended the conference. Their presence, she noted, demonstrated that concern for human rights could unite public officials across institutional and political boundaries.
Rights that many Europeans regard as fundamental and self-evident remain denied to people in many parts of the world, she observed. This reality makes international solidarity especially important for Iranian women and young people, who have demonstrated extraordinary courage over years of resistance.
For Carli, Cuneo’s participation was a continuation of the city’s longstanding commitment to freedom, not simply a symbolic gesture. The city intended to stand alongside those fighting for human dignity and fundamental rights in Iran.
Supporting a Democratic Alternative for Iran
Carli also highlighted the Iranian Resistance’s Ten-Point Plan, presenting its principles as a framework for the democratic future that the conference sought to support.
The plan calls for the establishment of a democratic republic, freedom of expression and association, respect for human rights and the abolition of the death penalty, and the separation of religion and state.
It also guarantees full equality between women and men, an independent judiciary, and the rights of ethnic and national minorities. Its other principles include economic justice and equal opportunities, environmental protection, and a non-nuclear Iran.
By recalling these commitments, Carli underscored that solidarity with the Iranian people must extend beyond condemning repression. It must also support their right to determine their country’s political future and establish institutions that protect freedom, equality, and the rule of law.
The conference reaffirmed Cuneo’s position that the international community cannot remain indifferent to executions and systematic repression in Iran. Through its unanimous council resolutions and continued public engagement, the Italian city has sought to keep the plight of the Iranian people on the political agenda.
Carli’s message was clear: defending human rights requires sustained commitment, and the struggle of Iran’s women and young people for freedom deserves the active solidarity of democratic institutions across Europe.
