Political Prisoner Ali Moezi Issues Warning from Ghezel Hesar Prison

Ghezel Hesar Prison – July 26, 2025 — In a chilling open letter smuggled out of Iran’s notorious Ghezel Hesar prison, political prisoner Ali Moezi has sounded the alarm over what he calls a looming crime “similar to the summer of 1988,” referring to the massacre of thousands of political prisoners by the Iranian regime.

In the opening lines of his letter, Moezi writes:

“Is a crime similar to the summer of 1988 on the verge of happening? What is evident is the regime’s boundless terror of the final battle with the people in the upcoming uprising.”

According to Moezi, the regime has ramped up its crackdown on all fronts following what he describes as a “self-made ceasefire” in the recent war.

“The clerical regime, which has left no boundary untouched in its hostility toward the people, has taken up a more intensified course of repression following its self-fabricated ceasefire,” he states.
“A wave of arrests, patrols and searches, the killing of Kurdish and Baluchi porters and fuel carriers, checkpoints, shootings and the murder of ordinary people, an increase in death sentences including repeat executions, laws aimed at speeding up executions, and growing pressure on political prisoners—these are all part of the picture.”

Moezi notes that even regime-backed Friday prayer leaders and state media are now drawing parallels to the infamous 1988 massacre.

“Some Friday prayer leaders and regime-linked news agencies are even talking of conditions resembling the summer of 1988. The abduction, enforced disappearance, and forced relocation of political prisoners must be viewed in this light.”

He specifically names several recent incidents involving supporters of the opposition group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK):

“In this regard, we recall the abduction of political prisoners supporting the Mojahedin such as Ali Younesi, Bijan Kazemi, Arghavan Fallahi, and earlier Miryousef Younesi, Behrouz Ehsani, and Mehdi Hassani.”
“Additionally, 15 political prisoners who support the Mojahedin have been sentenced to death.”

Moezi highlights a recent attempt to transfer another prominent MEK supporter:

“Last Wednesday, just before the weekend holiday, security agents attempted the failed abduction of political prisoner Saeed Masouri in Ghezel Hesar prison. It later became clear that they intended to silently and suddenly exile him to one of the remote prisons under harsh conditions.”

His letter ends with a direct and urgent question to the public and international community:

“Now the question facing everyone is: Is a crime similar to the summer of 1988 about to take place? Are they testing the waters, or are they acting insanely out of confusion and desperation?”
“Whatever it is, we see it as our duty to warn society, awakened consciences, and human rights institutions.

In a striking indictment of the regime’s current trajectory, Moezi states:

“What is evident is the regime’s boundless terror of its final battle with the people in the upcoming uprising. The regime’s main enemy is the very people it has plundered and repressed. After the great uprising of 2022, it has become crystal clear that no trick, no manipulation, no manufactured crisis, and no foreign war can cover up the real war—the war between the people and the regime—or offer the regime an escape route.”

He further explains that the regime is no longer only targeting organized opposition but now faces a decentralized, growing threat from within society itself:

“There was a time when the regime was mainly fighting the forerunners of the People’s Mojahedin, but now it’s facing countless unknown fighters from among the masses—multiplying Resistance Units and a thousand Ashrafs. And it should be afraid, because its very foundations may be uprooted in the final battle.”

Ali Moezi’s stark warning adds to growing concern among human rights organizations that the Iranian regime may be preparing for another large-scale purge of dissidents behind prison walls. His message is both a testimony to the escalating repression and a call to action for international observers and defenders of human rights.
