In a formal complaint to the Security Council, Yemen accuses Tehran of violating international resolutions and fueling regional instability with arms shipments and support for Houthi militias.
On Saturday, July 26, Al-Arabiya reported that the internationally recognized government of Yemen has formally called on the United Nations Security Council to take a decisive stand against what it described as “Iran’s blatant interference” in Yemen’s internal affairs.
In an official protest note delivered to the Security Council’s current president, Pakistani Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdullah Al-Saadi, accused the Iranian regime of systematically violating multiple UN resolutions — particularly Resolutions 2140 and 2216 — through its ongoing military and logistical support for the Houthi militias.
Yemeni Foreign Minister Shaya Mohsin Zindani detailed that on June 27, the country’s National Resistance Forces and Coast Guard intercepted a large shipment of Iranian regime weaponry weighing approximately 750 tons.
The intercepted cargo, which was en route to the Houthis, included a wide array of advanced weapon systems: naval and air missile platforms, air defense systems, reconnaissance and attack drones, anti-tank missiles, sniper rifles, modern radar units, large quantities of ammunition, and even eavesdropping equipment. Notably, the shipment also contained user manuals written in Persian, directly linking the cargo to Iran’s regime.
According to the protest note, this arms smuggling effort is part of a broader campaign by Tehran to escalate the conflict in Yemen. The Yemeni government accused Iran’s regime of actively enabling Houthi attacks against Yemeni cities, infrastructure, and neighboring states, and of endangering international maritime navigation through the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
The letter urged the Security Council to:
- Unequivocally condemn Iran regime’s violations,
- Impose sanctions on the individuals and networks involved in arms trafficking,
- Strengthen oversight through mechanisms like the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM),
- Accelerate the formation of a Yemeni expert panel to document these activities,
- And hold the Iranian regime fully accountable for actions that undermine international peace, security, and the authority of UN resolutions.
In its closing remarks, the Yemeni government reaffirmed that lasting peace and stability — both within Yemen and across the broader region — can only be achieved through the full restoration of Yemen’s legitimate institutions and the government’s sovereign control over all territory, particularly its coastal regions.
Only then, the statement emphasized, can Yemen fulfill its responsibilities to its citizens and safeguard regional and international security.
