For decades, the Iranian regime has engaged in a relentless campaign of terrorism, smuggling, and assassinations. Its actions, which include hiring professional hitmen to eliminate political opponents and supporting illicit activities across the globe, reflect a government that operates with impunity and disregard for international norms.
However, Western governments face a unique challenge in dealing with this regime. Iran’s theocratic dictatorship doesn’t conform to the traditional models of terrorism or fascism seen in the past. It has far surpassed common standards of corruption and destabilization, yet some Western nations continue to adopt appeasement strategies rather than addressing the threat head-on.
A History of Aggression
Iran’s regime, over its forty-year history, has consistently demonstrated that it has no intention of living harmoniously with its neighbors or the global community. Instead, it thrives on hostility, manipulation, and violence.
Take, for example, the recent remarks by former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley. During her presidential campaign, she revealed that the FBI had notified her that Iran was meddling in the U.S. elections to undermine her candidacy. She also disclosed that she had been named in Iranian assassination plots, alongside President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
Financial Manipulation and Terrorism
Iran not only engages in direct acts of violence but also exploits the international financial system to fund its activities. According to a Wall Street Journal report, at least three Iraqi banks have funneled tens of billions of dollars to the Iranian regime by abusing a system originally set up by the United States.
Brian Nelson, the former Undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, stated that Iran seeks to exploit financial systems not just in Iraq but throughout the region. A single business tycoon, Ali Ghulam, used his banks in Iraq to transfer vast sums, much of which was untraceable. U.S. officials believe a significant portion of these funds ended up supporting Iran’s military and its terrorist proxies.
Audits reviewed by the Wall Street Journal revealed that Ghulam has deep ties to Iranian-backed militia groups. In 2021 alone, he allegedly delivered over $1 billion to Iran, further demonstrating the regime’s ability to leverage financial systems for its malign activities.
Targeting U.S. Elections and Officials
Iran’s interference extends beyond financial manipulation. Mike Turner, Chairman of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee, recently called out the Biden administration for ignoring Iranian interference in U.S. elections. Turner pointed to assassination plots targeting Donald Trump and members of his cabinet in retaliation for the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. These plots represent some of the highest levels of election meddling, yet they have been met with a concerning degree of indifference from some Western governments.
State-Sponsored Terrorism in Europe
The Iranian regime’s terrorism is not confined to the Middle East or the United States. It has also targeted opposition groups and individuals in Europe. On September 9, 2024, agents of the Iranian regime’s intelligence services launched a Molotov cocktail attack on a building associated with the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) in Stockholm. This incident follows a series of similar attacks, including gunfire and incendiary attacks on NCRI buildings in Paris and Berlin in 2023.
Even prominent figures are not safe from the regime’s reach. On November 9, 2023, Professor Alejo Vidal-Quadras, the former Vice-President of the European Parliament, survived an assassination attempt in Madrid, orchestrated by Iranian agents.
A Washington Post report from September 12, 2024 revealed that Iran has increasingly relied on criminal networks to carry out violent plots in both the United States and Europe. These networks include notorious groups like the Hells Angels and the Russian mafia, as well as drug trafficking syndicates. This shift in tactics highlights Iran’s growing reliance on transnational repression to silence dissidents and extend its reach across the globe.
Iran and Russia: A Dangerous Alliance
The Iranian regime’s aggressive foreign policy is not limited to covert operations. On September 10, 2024, the United States confirmed reports that Iran had transferred Fath 360 short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. These missiles, likely to be deployed in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, represent a deepening military collaboration between the two authoritarian regimes, further exacerbating the devastation caused by the war.
The West’s Dangerous Appeasement
Despite Iran’s escalating aggression, many Western governments continue to adopt policies of appeasement. This reluctance to confront Tehran only emboldens the regime to continue its campaign of terrorism, both regionally and globally. The primary victims of this appeasement are not only the people of the West but also the Iranian people, who suffer under a brutal dictatorship.
The regime’s crackdown on its opposition groups is intensifying. Recently, Iranian Kurdish parties have faced increased pressure, and political dissidents, such as Behzad Khosravi, have been forced to return to Iran under duress. Meanwhile, Iran’s malign influence continues to spread throughout the Middle East, as evidenced by its role in the Gaza conflict.
Conclusion: A Call for Urgent Action
As long as Western nations continue to appease the Iranian regime, the global threat of terrorism will only worsen. The Iranian dictatorship has proven time and again that it has no interest in peaceful coexistence. Its actions are a direct challenge to international stability, and without decisive action, the consequences will continue to unfold on a global scale.
The time for appeasement has passed. The international community must recognize the Iranian regime for what it is: a state sponsor of terrorism that poses a serious and ongoing threat to global security. Only through concerted efforts can the tide of terrorism and repression be turned back, both for the safety of the world and for the liberation of the Iranian people.
