Revolutions often start because of unbridled injustice against the society or a minority or because of the courage of a person whose act ignites the people’s fury. In the past years, Iran’s people have revolted against the regime, but the regime was able to crack down on the protests.

This time it seems to be different and for the regime, it is too difficult to contain the protests. Anger is more widespread than in the past years. The people have suffered heavily under the mullahs’ rule, especially because the regime and its Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) have control of over 70 percent of the country’s economy, causing great suffering for millions of Iranians.

The protests have drawn in people of every age. From every corner of the country, even minorities have joined the protests. Important, and for the regime dangerous, groups are joining the protests like the merchants and shopkeepers of the Grand Bazaar of Tehran or the petrochemical workers.

The regime has changed its tactic to crack down on the protests. The suppressive are arresting hundreds even thousands of people. They do not engage in indiscriminate killings but cause serious injuries to the protesters to spread fear. With this tactic, the regime believes that it can control the spread of the protests or at least slow it down until they fade away.

But the regime is gravely mistaken. On October 3, the regime’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei, and the country’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf both expressed their fear over the protests and warned that the protests could aim to topple the regime. They expressed their full support for the regime’s security forces and claimed that the protesters are agents of foreign countries.

That fear was manifested in the regime’s decision to shut down the internet, to prevent more people from joining the protests. This made it clear that the regime has not had the power of the past to silence the people.

Until now there were only hollow threats by people like the chief of intelligence, the chief of police, the commander of the IRGC, and the chief of the judiciary. Realizing that the people no longer fear the regime, many of them are beginning to change their tone.

Slogans like “death to the dictator”, and “this is no longer a protest, it is a revolution” reflect this fearlessness. The overwhelming majority of Iranians are saying that they have had enough and want regime change.

The regime is on borrowed time and can no longer solve the problems of the country. And its so-called reformists and their papers suggest the regime consider the demands of the people are too little too late. As they say, the water has already passed under the bridge.
