71 MPs unite across party lines to back Early Day Motion 65003, calling for a democratic republic and an end to IRGC violence.
LONDON — A significant group of British Members of Parliament has joined forces to issue a strong statement of support for the people of Iran, calling for an end to decades of dictatorship and the establishment of a democratic republic.
Early Day Motion (EDM) 65003, titled “Situation in Iran,” was tabled in the House of Commons on January 6, 2026. The motion, which has gained momentum with 71 signatures from across the political spectrum, highlights the “courage and resolve” of Iranian citizens as they struggle for fundamental human rights and the freedom to elect their own representatives.
The Statement
The full text of the motion as tabled in Parliament reads:
“That this House expresses its strong support for the people of Iran, and their courage and resolve in their ongoing struggle against all forms of dictatorships of the past and present and for freedom, human rights, and a democratic republic, where people of Iran have the opportunity to elect their own representatives; condemns all acts of violence, including the death of 32 protesters, oppression, and restrictions on peaceful protest and free expression by Government and IRGC; notes the bravery of Iranian citizens advocating for the rule of law and that the UK Government must stand with the Iranian people and continue to support democratic movements globally; and confirms its commitment to the principles of democracy, freedom and the protection of rights.”
Cross-Party Consensus
Led by primary sponsor Jim Shannon (DUP), the motion is backed by a diverse group of sponsors including high-profile Conservative MPs Bob Blackman and Sir Julian Lewis, as well as Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer.
The signatories represent a broad coalition, including members from the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party (SNP), and Plaid Cymru. This cross-party unity signals a hardening of parliamentary sentiment against the Iranian regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and a growing demand for the UK government to take a more active role in supporting Iranian democratic movements.
The motion specifically condemns the “death of 32 protesters” and the systemic restrictions on free expression, placing the blame directly on the Iranian government and the IRGC.
