The Silent Rebellion Grows Louder
In a powerful display of resistance against the Iranian regime’s oppressive tactics, the 32nd week of the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign has ignited a wave of solidarity across 21 prisons throughout Iran. On the morning of September 3, political prisoners and ordinary inmates alike joined forces, launching a hunger strike that echoes their collective cry for justice and human rights.
This week, the campaign welcomed two new participants: Asadabad prison in Isfahan and Bam prison in Kerman, joining a growing list of facilities including Evin, Qezel Hesar, Karaj Central Penitentiary, and many others spanning the nation. The expanding roster of participating prisons underscores the widespread discontent with the regime’s brutal practices and the growing momentum of this grassroots movement.
In a poignant statement, the striking prisoners condemned the issuance and execution of what they termed “inhumane death sentences.” They emphasized their unwavering commitment to abolishing executions and ending what they described as an “inhumane situation.” The prisoners also vehemently denounced the recent murders of Mohammad Mirmusavi and Komail Abolhasani, decrying the regime’s flagrant violation of Iranian citizens’ fundamental right to life.
The statement revealed a chilling juxtaposition: ‘As hundreds of prisoners were engaging in their peaceful protest last Tuesday, the judicial system of Iran’s religious dictatorship carried out a public execution in Sabzevar city. This brazen act of state violence, performed in full view of the public, serves as a stark reminder of the regime’s disregard for human dignity and international human rights norms.’
Adding to the litany of atrocities, two other prisoners – Mohammad Mirmusavi in Lahijan and Komail Abolhasani in Tonekabon – were reportedly tortured and brutally killed by police and prison security officers. These horrific incidents occurred simultaneously with the issuance of a death sentence for Abbas Turnaji, a political prisoner in Bam, Kerman province, further highlighting the urgent need for reform and accountability within Iran’s justice system.
The campaign has garnered significant international attention, with 68 human rights organizations and institutions pledging their support. This growing coalition of advocates serves to amplify the voices of those behind bars, bringing their struggle to the global stage.
As the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign enters its 32nd week, it stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of Iran’s prisoners. Their peaceful resistance in the face of overwhelming oppression serves as a powerful indictment of the regime’s human rights abuses and a beacon of hope for those who yearn for justice and freedom in Iran.
The world watches as these brave individuals, stripped of their liberty but not their dignity, continue their fight against the death penalty and for the basic human rights that should be inalienable to all. Their struggle is not just for themselves, but for the soul of a nation and the universal principles of human dignity and justice.
