The “No Execution Tuesdays” campaign, in a statement released on Tuesday, January 6, reported that Iranian authorities executed 21 individuals on January 1, marking a grim start to the new year.
According to the campaign, since December 21, 2024, the number of executions in Iran has surpassed 80. Throughout 2024, the total reached 1,000—a new and troubling record in the country’s use of the death penalty. This increase comes in stark contrast to global trends, as 128 countries have abolished the death penalty. Notably, Zimbabwe recently eliminated capital punishment entirely as part of its New Year reforms. However, in Iran, executions continue to escalate.
Hunger Strikes and Solidarity Actions
Members of the “No Execution Tuesdays” campaign announced plans to continue their hunger strike on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, coinciding with the anniversary of the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 by the regime’s Revolutionary Guards on January 8, 2020. Families of the victims of the plane crash have expressed solidarity with the campaign, uniting with other protesters to oppose the regime’s policies.
In a notable expansion of the campaign, prisoners in Sepidar Ahvaz and Ramhormoz prisons have joined the protest movement. The campaign now spans 30 prisons across the country, where prisoners are engaging in hunger strikes to denounce death sentences and the regime’s oppressive policies.
