The British government has raised alarm over the increasing threat posed by Iran, revealing that MI5 has disrupted 20 plots by the Iranian regime since early 2022. These incidents, described as “potentially lethal threats to British citizens and UK residents,” underscore Tehran’s escalating aggression beyond its borders.

The disclosure, made by Security Minister Dan Jarvis in a statement to Parliament on Tuesday, comes amid a significant rise in MI5’s investigations into state threats—an increase of 48% in the past year alone. British intelligence is currently probing multiple cases of suspected sabotage linked to Russian intelligence, Chinese espionage, and Iran regime’s efforts to intimidate and assassinate dissidents abroad.

Iran’s Escalating Aggression

“The Iranian regime has become increasingly emboldened, asserting itself more aggressively to advance their objectives and undermine ours,” Jarvis stated. “This is evidenced by the fact that direct action against UK targets has substantially increased over recent years.”

Iran’s regime has been actively targeting political critics and perceived enemies worldwide, particularly journalists and media organizations reporting on its internal repression. Jewish and Israeli communities internationally have also been subject to Iranian regime threats and intimidation campaigns.

Criminal Networks and Transnational Repression

The UK government’s concerns are further supported by previous sanctions imposed on Naji Sharifi Zindashti, an alleged Iranian drug trafficker with suspected ties to Tehran’s intelligence services. Last year, the U.S. charged Zindashti with orchestrating an assassination plot involving a Hells Angels member to kill an Iranian defector in Maryland. According to the U.S. Treasury, Iran increasingly relies on organized crime groups to carry out assassinations and kidnappings, allowing the regime to obscure its direct involvement and maintain plausible deniability.

Attacks on Journalists and the Media

The UK government’s sanctions also targeted members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Unit 840, who were reportedly involved in hiring criminals to carry out assassinations.

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has also warned that Iranian dissident groups and individuals in Europe face similar threats from Tehran-backed operatives.

Strengthening the UK’s Defenses

In response to these threats, Minister Jarvis emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting British citizens and countering Iranian regime aggression. “It is clear that these plots are a conscious strategy of the Iranian regime to stifle criticism through intimidation and fear. These threats are unacceptable. They must and will be defended against at every turn.”

To bolster national security, the British government has placed the entire Iranian regime state under the “enhanced tier” of the new Foreign Influence Registration Scheme. This measure will mandate criminal proxies acting on Iran regime’s behalf to register their activities or face up to five years in prison. Although the scheme is not yet operational, the government aims to have it in place by summer.

Additionally, the British government has appointed Jonathan Hall KC, the independent reviewer of state threat and terrorism legislation, to reassess Britain’s counterterrorism strategies and explore their application to modern state threats. However, the timeline for this review remains uncertain.
