Iran regime’s leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned that Iran would not be negotiating with the United States after U.S. President Donald Trump re-iterated his previous invitation to Iran. However, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has expressly voiced the opposite intention. He said last week that negotiations would be possible but indicated that he thought that the United States is desperate to meet because it is more in need.

Regime’s president Rouhani said during a meeting with the cabinet that it was the United States that left the negotiation table in the first place and that “the path is open before them”.

Officials on the Supreme Leader’s side are saying that President Rouhani is allowing himself to be taken in and duped by the United States. They are saying that the Iranian president is showing his weakness by simply entertaining the idea of negotiating with the great enemy.

The newspaper that is commonly known as the Supreme Leader’s mouthpiece, the Keyhan, wrote: “When Rouhani himself describes negotiating with the promise-breaking-U.S. as stupidity, what good will it bring to have a referendum about negotiations? Is the issue with the lack of an agreement or a lack of respecting it? Why should we bring back the ball that is already in the court of the enemy to our court?”

However, negotiating with the Iranian regime is a waste of time and resources. It cannot be trusted and it cannot keep its word. We know this is the case because it systematically goes back on its word and ignores its obligations.

For example, the Iranian regime, under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, is obliged to stop any development of long-range missiles that have the capability of carrying a nuclear weapon. It has chosen to ignore this resolution, showing once again, that it cannot be trusted.

It also has other obligations, such as to stop executing prisoners that were children when they committed their alleged crime. The regime continues to do so.

The regime has no way out of its current impasse and conditions in the country will continue to deteriorate for as long as the mullahs still have a grasp on power. It is currently cracking down on the people even more than before because it is trying to quash dissent.

For the situation to move forward, there is no need for military involvement. The people are perfectly capable of bringing about regime change, but they need the support of the international community. Europe could end its policies of appeasement towards the regime and listen to the people. European leaders that value human rights, equality and democracy could insure that the Iranian regime is held accountable for its blatant abuses of power. The United States could continue exerting economic pressure. It is just a matter of time before the regime falls.
