The report has been forwarded to the UN Security Council and it indicates that “missile remnants”, “related military equipment” and “military unmanned aerial vehicles” entered Yemen after the targeted arms embargo was introduced. The reports made it clear that the evidence found proves the equipment is of Iranian origin.

The experts thus declared that, because of this evidence, Iran is in non-compliance with Resolution 2216, Paragraph 14 regarding the Yemeni arms embargo.

Saudi Arabia has been the target of an increasing number of ballistic missile launches being carried out by the Houthi rebels in Yemen. At the start of the conflict in Yemen, the rebels did not have such capability. Now, almost three years later, the situation has drastically changed.

On Saturday, the second missile attack in the space of a week was launched by the Houthis to an area in southern Saudi Arabia. The latest target was a military base, but there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

Tensions between Iran and the kingdom have been increasing in recent months. At the beginning of November last year, Saudi air defence intercepted a ballistic missile that was heading towards the King Khalid International Airport near the kingdom’s capital.

Iran is known to finance and provide arms and weapons to many different proxies and militias and this is not the first time it has been said that Iran is arming the Houthis. A report compiled by the United Nations in 2015 mentioned that Iran’s provision of weapons to Houthi rebels dates back to 2009. It also detailed the seizure of an Iranian ship by Yemeni authorities which was carrying a large cache of weapons.

In the latest report, the UN experts said that Iran is responsible for a large proportion of the conflict in Yemen.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley also notified the UN Security Council about Iran’s arming of Houthi rebels last month, stating that there was irrefutable evidence to back the claims. “These are Iranian made, these are Iranian sent and these were Iranian given. You will see us build a coalition to really push back against Iran and what they’re doing.”

The Trump administration, unlike the previous administration, is determined to curb the Iranian threat. It is evident that cutting off several of Iran’s major activities is a way in which Trump is trying to target the Iranian regime. It is expected that he will announce further sanctions on Iran faced with the evidence that has been made public.

President Trump also made it very clear during the recent protests that spread across Iran that he was backing the people of Iran who are fed up with the corrupt leadership of the country.
